Bouncing Bertha

The noise was like a big rat gnawing at some wood
Four burly miners held her bed down the best they could
Little Bertha Sybert weighed only sixty pounds
But every night before she slept, she’d bounce plum off the ground

And she’d cry when she tried to sleep
That’s when that white, fuzzy spirit started to creep
So there she lay when people came
To watch that child’s bed hop, Bouncing Bertha was her name

Once two college doctors came from Tennessee
To visit Bertha’s family, writing down all they had seen
While they ate their dinner, the meat flew from their plates
The soup tureen turned over, and they noted that was strange

As she cried when she tried to sleep
That’s when that white, fuzzy spirit started to creep
And there she lay when people came
To watch that child’s bed hop, Bouncing Bertha was her name

Reporters blamed the bed springs, an attention seeking kid
Surely no apparition was to blame for what she did
The bouncing finally let up and Bertha lived her life
But the memories of her childhood always cut her like a knife

When she’d cry as she tried to sleep
That’s when that white, fuzzy spirit started to creep
So did she lie when people came
To watch that child’s bed hop, Bouncing Bertha was her name
