It all began a hundred years ago
When he painted a pig ‘cause the good Lord told him so
Get right with God was what it had to say
This is the legend of Harrison Mayes
Up Mingo holler, down in a mine
A broken rail car crushed him alive
He cried out to God, “Lord if I survive
I’ll spread your Word the rest of my life”
Get right with God, Jesus loves you
Get right with God, Jesus saves
Some found him odd and some a virtue
So goes the legend of Harrison Mayes
Filled liquor bottles with notes from the Lord
Float down the river and drop them overboard
He’d paint anything from bikes to trucks to trains
Built a crossed shape house only seen from a plane
Forming concrete is what he loved the most
A four foot heart on a nine foot post
Or a twelve foot cross with letters in red
Get right with God is what most of ‘em said
Get right with God, Jesus loves you
Get right with God, Jesus saves
Some found him odd and some a virtue
So goes the legend of Harrison Mayes
If he made ten dollars, he’d give the Lord five
Hire a truck ‘cause he never learned to drive
Mined coal all night just to keep his family fed
Kept his promise to the Lord, even after his death
He planted his crosses mainly through the south
In 44 states they’re scattered about
So if you still see one standing today
Remember the legend of Harrison Mayes
